We all have those films we’re looking forward to. Some we’re only curious about, while others have us squealing every time we see advertisements for them (or is that just me?). Now that we’ve gotten into the good movie season, I think it’s high time I listed my Crown Jewels of the upcoming movie season and gave you some of the reasons why I’m so pumped for them.
First, a quick list of runners up: Fantastic 4, The Age of Adeline, Aloha, Mr. Holmes, Hotel Transylvania 2, The Walk, and The Peanuts Movie. These movies range have all intrigued me, but none of them quite cracked the top ten.
10. Bridge of Spies
I know almost nothing about this movie except that it’s a Cold War spy thriller starring Tom Hanks and directed by Steven Spielberg. And really, what more do I need to know? Cold War spies are the best kind, and Spielberg and Hanks are two of the best in the filmmaking business.
Guardians of the Galaxy proved that Marvel Studios can do almost anything and it’ll be worth seeing, and recent reports suggest Ant-Man will have the same tone. Despite its director switch and an okay trailer, the involvement of Michael Douglas as Hank Pym and the opportunity to see a shrinking superhero peak my interest enough to get me to the theater.
8. In the Heart of the Sea
Directed by Ron Howard and starring Chris Hemsworth and Cillian Murphy, this film tells the tale of Herman Melville and the fateful voyage that inspired Moby Dick. First, it’s Thor and Scarecrow working together (and they’re both great actors), and second, who doesn’t want to see a giant sperm whale thrash a bunch of guys?
7. Mission Impossible: Rogue Nation
Tom Cruise’s Ethan Hunt takes on the Syndicate, an anti-IMF organization. Everybody’s favorite spies are back, including Simon Pegg, Ving Rhames, and Jeremy Renner. Oh, and Tom Cruise is flying on the outside of a plane. For everyone who wondered how they were going to top the Dubai tower scene, now you know.
Meanwhile, James Bond is taking on a similar foe: his old nemesis, Spectre. With the smashing success of Skyfall, Bond is primed for his biggest hit yet, so it makes sense to reintroduce the organization that gave him the most trouble at the start of his career. And it’s been a while since I’ve seen some good cat-stroking in a Bond film.
5. Inside Out
Pixar is another entertainment company with the Midas touch, and it has the benefit of being a powerhouse of original ideas. Now it’s bringing another to the screen, focusing on a young girl’s emotions played by such talented comedic actors as Amy Poehler, Mindy Kaling, and Bill Hader. I’m looking forward to a film that’s as emotionally fulfilling as its cast of characters.
4. Jurassic World
In what looks like either an alternate universe or a monumentally bad idea, Jurassic Park is open for business. With Chris Pratt as raptor whisperer, a mosasaur capable of swallowing Jaws whole, and a genetic hybrid dinosaur as a deadly new attraction (not to mention a fully functional park website), this film has me curious to see what they’ll throw at us next.
Starring George Clooney, Britt Roberson, and Hugh Laurie, and directed by Brad Bird, this film is inspired by the Disney theme park of the same name. Other than that, I don’t know much about it, but I’ve been enchanted by the movie since its first advertisements. With so much talent behind it, I’m more pumped about this movie than any human being has a right to be.
2. Star Wars: The Force Awakens
Star Wars is back in full Force. Not only does it bring back the old favorite characters, but it also introduces us to fresh new talent, much as the original series did. With quality director J. J. Abrams at the helm, an emphasis on practical effects, and George Lucas nowhere near the project (for those of us who haven’t forgiven him for the prequels), this film has me excited to see where this universe can go next!
1. Avengers: Age of Ultron
I was hooked from the first trailer, and I’m still pumped now that all the advertising is pretty much done. We’ve seen Joss Whedon do wonders with all our favorite characters before; now he’s primed to do it all again with even more great characters, more awesome fights, and a darker tone. Marvel’s Phase II comes to a head in this film, and cannot wait for May so I can go see this film in theaters.
